The Church School children of St George Serbian Orthodox Church, led by their teacher Michelle Radanovich, delivered their annual St Sava Program on Sunday, January 29th. The students offered their poems and prayers in both the Serbian and English languages.
Two High School Seniors participated in their last St Sava Celebration. Nikola Malobabic delivered a moving essay to the congregation entitled "Why I go to Church." In it, he mentioned the powerful connection that his faith has created between him and his family, both alive and departed. Alex Radanovich assisted Fr Aleksa during the Slava celebration, reading prayers in front of the congregation.
Fr Aleksa spoke on the importance of bringing up our children in the faith so that, when they grow up and are faced with making their own decisions in life, they remain a connected part of the body of Christ.

Beginning in Fall of 2011, and completing in January of 2012, St George Serbian Orthodox Church hosted a series of well-attended re-catechism classes. Every Tuesday night at 6:00pm, students gathered for a daily vespers service. Two readers participated in chanting and reading the services, while the entire group sang responses. Immediately following the service, the students gathered in the hall for a series of hands-on courses that took them through the Orthodox Faith as it relates to our Divine Liturgy on Sunday. The course textbook was Fr Thomas Hopko's The Orthodox Faith: Volume II - Worship.
Students diligently completed homework assignments and faithful attended classes that averaged around 10 in attendance, peaking at 14 during a guest discussion by V. Rev. Stavrophor Dennis Pavichevich. Following Divine Liturgy on January 14th, 2012, the students took their final exam before enjoying a lunch together, discussing their favorite aspects and lessons from the previous semester.
Jim Dougan's favorite lesson was "Proskomedia" - he enjoyed seeing the uncut prosphora, and learning about what and why pieces are cut from it. Nick Malobabic said he liked the lessons, but his favorite aspect of the courses were the lively discussions related to the course material.
The students expressed interest in continuing their study during a second semester, this time focusing on the history of the Orthodox Christian Church. Keep checking our website for more details as they become available! |

The congregation of St. George Serbian Orthodox Church located in Lorain, Ohio celebrated their annual Kolo Srpski Sestara slava on November 13, 2011. The sunny day began with Divine Liturgy at 10 A.M. with Father Aleksa Pavichevich officiating. He was assisted by altar boys and the congregation sang responses.
Following Divine Liturgy, the congregation gathered in the hall below the church to bless the kolach made by Kim Malobabic and the koljivo made by Kathy Fritsch. Father Aleksa sang prayers and blessed the kolach with Sunday School children turning the bread. Next, Father Aleksa blessed the food prepared for the slava by Kolo officers. Other Kolo members provided side dishes and baked goods.
After renewing friendships and socializing, the brief program began with Darlene Zunich congratulating all Kolo members for their participation in the slava. She stated that the Kolo was founded in 1928 and hoped it would continue forward for many years. Also congratulated was Father Aleksa and Popadija Emily for the birth of their daughter, Zora. She joins two other children, Sophia and Lazar. The Kumovi of the slava were recognized - Mitchell and Violet Zunich (my uncle and aunt) for their many years of service.
